'Flashmob' is a large group of people who assemble suddenly in a public place, perform an unusual action for a brief period of time, then quickly disperse. Originated by Bill Wasik, senior editor of Harper's magazine, as a social experiment designed to highlight the cultural atmosphere of conformity.

Whats funny is that if you did this in Japan, nothing would happen at all, all the frozen people would just be completely ignored.

Did they change their name to F'lashmob? I thought it was Improv Everywhere. Maybe it is both.

There is a good "This American Life" episode about the consequences of their stunts. One in particular in which they picked out some unknown band that was playing in NY and brought forty people to the show pretending to be their biggest fans.

But I love the frozen one, it reminds me of the Terry Gilliam movie where he got hundreds of extras to waltz in Grand Central.
